Starting May 1, 2024, there will be a significant update to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) regulations under MARPOL Annex V, specifically affecting the maintenance of a Garbage Record Book on yachts.
According to IMO Resolution MEPC.360(79), it is now mandatory for:
•Yachts that are 100 gross tons or larger,
and
•Yachts certified to carry 15 or more people, irrespective of their size,
to have a Garbage Record Book on board.
This is a change from the previous requirement, which applied only to yachts of 400 gross tons and above. Therefore, owners and operators of yachts between 100 and 399 gross tons should be aware that this new regulation applies to them.
For more information and detailed guidance, you are advised to consult the Republic of the Marshall Islands Marine Notice 2-013-5, which addresses the prevention of garbage pollution from ships under MARPOL Annex V.
